Disney's Port Orleans Riverside offers something most moderate resorts don't: boat service. The Sassagoula River boats connect Riverside to Disney Springs — a pleasant alternative to buses for evening entertainment.

For the theme parks, it's bus-only. This guide covers all your options.

Your Transportation Options

Port Orleans Riverside has two transportation modes:

Mode Destinations Notes
Boat Disney Springs Sassagoula River ferry
Bus All 4 parks + Disney Springs Standard Disney bus service

No monorail or Skyliner access.

The Boat to Disney Springs

The Sassagoula River boats run between Port Orleans Riverside, Port Orleans French Quarter, and Disney Springs.

To Disney Springs

Boat time: 20-25 minutes (plus 5-10 min wait)

Step Time
Walk to boat dock 3-10 min (varies by building)
Wait for boat 5-10 min
Ride to Disney Springs 15-20 min
Total 23-40 min

Bus time: 15-25 minutes total (faster but less scenic)

The decision: The boat is slower but much more pleasant — a lazy river cruise through Disney property. Take the boat when you have time; take the bus when you're in a hurry.

Boat Schedule

Boats run from morning until late evening (typically until Disney Springs closes). Service is more frequent during peak dining hours.

Port Orleans Riverside vs. French Quarter

The two Port Orleans resorts are connected by the Sassagoula River boats and shared bus service.

Factor Riverside French Quarter
Size Large (2,048 rooms) Smaller (1,008 rooms)
Theming Southern plantation/bayou New Orleans French Quarter
Boat dock Yes Yes
Bus stops Multiple Single
Walk to French Quarter 10-15 min via path

Transportation difference: French Quarter is more compact, meaning shorter walks to the bus stop and boat dock. Riverside is spread out — some buildings are 8-10 minutes from transportation.

If transportation convenience matters more than room selection, French Quarter has an edge.

The Size Factor

Port Orleans Riverside is one of Disney's larger moderate resorts. Buildings are spread across several areas:

Magnolia Bend: Mansion-style buildings, further from main lobby and transportation

Alligator Bayou: Rustic buildings, mixed distances to transportation

Walk Times to Bus Stop/Boat Dock

Area Walk to Transportation
Near main lobby 3-5 min
Alligator Bayou (close) 5-7 min
Alligator Bayou (far) 8-10 min
Magnolia Bend (close) 6-8 min
Magnolia Bend (far) 10-12 min

Request a building near the main lobby (Riverside Mill) for shortest walks.

Rope Drop Strategies

For Any Park

Leave time: 65-85 minutes before park opening

Port Orleans Riverside requires standard moderate resort timing, plus buffer for the resort's size if you're in a distant building.

Magic Kingdom requires TTC transfer — add extra time.

Park Close Strategies

From Magic Kingdom

Plan for TTC crowds plus a 15-20 minute bus ride. Leave early or stay late.

From Other Parks

Standard bus experience.

From Disney Springs

Take the boat. The evening cruise back along the Sassagoula River is one of the nicer Disney transportation experiences. You'll pass through the property as the sun sets or under the stars.

This is when the boat really shines. The bus is faster, but the boat is worth the extra time for the experience.

Tips for Port Orleans Riverside Guests

Take the Boat at Least Once

The Sassagoula River boats are a highlight of staying here. Even if you normally take the bus, try the boat for one evening return from Disney Springs.

Walk to French Quarter

The two Port Orleans resorts are connected by a walking/jogging path. You can walk to French Quarter (10-15 min) for Scat Cat's Club or a change of scenery.

Request a Preferred Location

If transportation matters, request a building near the main lobby (Riverside Mill food court area). The resort is spread out — distant buildings add 5-10 minutes to every trip.

Boatwright's Dining Hall

The on-site table service restaurant means you don't need transportation for a nice dinner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the boat faster than the bus to Disney Springs?

No. The bus is faster (15-25 min vs. 23-40 min). The boat is scenic and pleasant, not fast.

Can I take the boat to the theme parks?

No. The Sassagoula boats only go to Disney Springs. All parks require buses.

Riverside or French Quarter — which is better for transportation?

French Quarter is more compact, so shorter walks. Riverside is larger with more amenities but transportation takes longer from distant rooms.

How late do the boats run?

Typically until Disney Springs closes (11 PM-12 AM depending on season).

The Bottom Line

Port Orleans Riverside offers a pleasant boat ride to Disney Springs — a nice moderate resort perk. For the theme parks, it's bus-only like most resorts.

The resort's size means building location affects transportation more than at smaller resorts. Request rooms near the main lobby for the best access.
