Hollywood Studios Rope Drop and Rise of the Resistance

Last updated: April 25, 2026

Updated regularly based on current transportation patterns

Hollywood Studios rope drop is dominated by one ride: Rise of the Resistance. It's the most time-sensitive rope drop at Disney World. Being 10 minutes late to the crowd can mean 30+ minutes more waiting — and on bad days, the ride may be down entirely.

This guide breaks down which resorts and transportation modes give you the best shot at conquering Rise — and the rest of Hollywood Studios.

The Rise of the Resistance Reality

Rise of the Resistance is why Hollywood Studios rope drop matters:

  • Wait times: typically 60–120+ minutes during peak hours
  • Early Entry advantage: large — resort guests can ride before the general public
  • Downtime risk: Rise has a long history of mechanical issues and delayed openings, with multiple recent incidents of the ride failing to open with the rest of the park. Early rides reduce the risk that you miss it entirely.

Every minute matters. First-in-line guests might wait 15–20 minutes. Guests arriving 10 minutes later might wait 45+ minutes — assuming the ride opens on time at all.

The Transportation Hierarchy

Tier 1: Walking (EPCOT-Area Resorts)

Resort Walk Time Notes
BoardWalk 15–20 min Most direct route
Swan 15–20 min Direct path available
Yacht Club 18–22 min Via BoardWalk
Dolphin 18–22 min Slightly further than Swan
Beach Club 20–25 min Furthest, but still viable

Walking is the most reliable option for Hollywood Studios rope drop.

Why walking wins:

  • You control your timing completely
  • No waiting for buses, boats, or Skyliner
  • No transfer points
  • Consistent every single day

The Skyliner exists, but for EPCOT-area resort guests, walking is often better. You're already close enough that the Skyliner adds complexity without saving time.

Tier 2: Direct Skyliner (Caribbean Beach, Riviera)

Resort Transfer Required? Total Time
Caribbean Beach No 10–15 min
Riviera Yes (at Caribbean Beach) 15–25 min

Caribbean Beach has direct Skyliner access to Hollywood Studios — no transfer. This is one of the best rope drop positions for HS.

Riviera is on the EPCOT Skyliner line, so its Hollywood Studios trips do require a transfer at the Caribbean Beach hub.

Tier 3: Skyliner with Transfer (Pop Century, Art of Animation)

Resort Total Time Notes
Pop Century 20–35 min Transfer at Caribbean Beach
Art of Animation 20–35 min Transfer at Caribbean Beach

Both resorts share a Skyliner station and require a transfer at Caribbean Beach. The transfer adds 5–10 minutes and introduces unpredictability.

Tier 4: Buses (All Resorts)

Time: 20–45 minutes total (depending on resort)

Step Time
Walk to bus stop 3–10 min
Wait for bus 5–20 min
Ride to Hollywood Studios 15–20 min

Buses are predictable. You know roughly when they're coming (check the My Disney Experience app). No transfers. Direct to the park entrance.

For Rise of the Resistance specifically, buses may beat the Skyliner from Pop/AoA because of the transfer factor.

Tier 5: Friendship Boats (EPCOT-Area Resorts)

Time: 20–30 minutes

The Friendship Boats serve EPCOT-area resorts with stops at both EPCOT and Hollywood Studios.

For rope drop, walk instead. Walking is faster and more reliable than waiting for boats.

The Skyliner Transfer Problem

If you're at Pop Century or Art of Animation targeting Rise of the Resistance, understand the transfer:

  1. Board Skyliner at your resort
  2. Ride to Caribbean Beach station (~5–7 min)
  3. Exit gondola
  4. Walk to Hollywood Studios platform (2–3 min)
  5. Wait for next gondola (3–8 min)
  6. Ride to Hollywood Studios (~6 min)

Total transfer overhead: 5–15 minutes of unpredictability — see The Hidden Cost of Transfers for the underlying math.

On a typical morning: The Skyliner works fine.

On a critical Rise rope drop morning: That 5–15 minute variance might cost you.

The Controversial Take: Buses vs. Skyliner for Rise

For Pop Century and Art of Animation guests targeting Rise of the Resistance, consider the bus:

Factor Skyliner Bus
Total time 20–35 min 20–35 min
Transfer Yes (Caribbean Beach) No
Predictability Variable More consistent
Experience Scenic Standard

Times are similar. The Skyliner is more pleasant, but the transfer adds variance.

For critical rope drops: The bus's predictability may be worth the trade-off.

For typical mornings: Either works. Take the Skyliner for the experience.

Timing Recommendations

If You're Walking (EPCOT-Area Resorts)

Leave time: 50–65 minutes before Early Entry

You're 15–25 minutes away. Leave early enough to be at the park entrance before they start admitting guests.

If You're Taking the Direct Skyliner (Caribbean Beach)

Leave time: 60–75 minutes before Early Entry

The Skyliner typically starts 60–75 minutes before Early Entry. Be at the station when it opens.

If You're Taking the Skyliner with Transfer (Pop Century, Art of Animation, Riviera)

Leave time: 70–85 minutes before Early Entry

Add buffer for the Caribbean Beach transfer. Arrive at your station 15–20 minutes before the Skyliner starts running.

If You're Taking a Bus

Leave time: 75–90 minutes before Early Entry

Be at your bus stop 90 minutes before Early Entry if you want the first bus.

Rope Drop Strategy by Ride

For Rise of the Resistance

Rise opens during Early Entry. This is when you ride it.

Leave time: Earliest of your options (see timing recommendations above)

After entering: Head straight down Hollywood Boulevard, veer left toward the Chinese Theater, continue past ABC Commissary, take the tunnel into Galaxy's Edge. Rise entrance is on your left.

Backup plan: Rise has frequent operational issues. Cast members sometimes announce status while you wait to enter. If it's confirmed down at park opening, pivot to Slinky Dog Dash or Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway.

For Slinky Dog Dash

Slinky opens during Early Entry. It's the second most popular rope drop target.

Leave time: 60–75 minutes before Early Entry (slightly less critical than Rise)

After entering: Head straight toward Toy Story Land (through Chinese Theater area, then right).

For Tower of Terror and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster

Leave time: 50–65 minutes before Early Entry

Less competitive than Rise or Slinky. Either ride is a good second or third target.

Quick Reference

Resort Type Best Method Time Rise Priority Rating
EPCOT-area resorts Walk 15–25 min Best
Caribbean Beach Direct Skyliner 10–15 min Best
Riviera Skyliner with transfer 15–25 min Strong
Pop Century Bus or Skyliner 20–35 min Good
Art of Animation Bus or Skyliner 20–35 min Good
All other resorts Bus 20–45 min Good

Common Mistakes

1. Assuming the Skyliner Is Always Faster

From Pop Century and Art of Animation, the Skyliner transfer adds time. For critical rope drops, buses are comparably fast and more predictable.

2. Not Having a Rise Backup Plan

Rise has frequent operational issues. Know your pivot — Slinky Dog, Runaway Railway, Tower — before you enter the park.

3. Taking Friendship Boats from EPCOT-Area Resorts

Walk. It's faster, and you don't wait for boats.

4. Arriving When Transportation "Starts Running"

Buses and Skyliner start about 60 minutes before Early Entry, but lines form earlier. Be there early.

The Bottom Line

Walking from EPCOT-area resorts is the most reliable Hollywood Studios rope drop option. You control your timing completely.

Caribbean Beach has direct Skyliner access — excellent for rope drop.

Pop Century and Art of Animation face the transfer decision. For Rise-critical mornings, consider the bus.

Everyone else is on buses, which work fine but don't offer an advantage.

Plan your timing around Rise, have a backup, and arrive early.
